1. eBay Leaving Commission Junction

eBay has announced that they will be closing their affiliate program on CJ and launching the eBay Partner Network, an in-house eBay affiliate program.

Back in September 2006, eBay announced the launch of their own affiliate linking infrastructure called Project Rover.

At the time, I speculated on my blog whether "a full secession from CJ (was) in the works?"

The eBay Partner Network is officially launching on April 1st, 2008. eBay started up with Commission Junction on March 2, 2001.

3. GeekCast 9 - The Last Affiliate Virgin

This week on the GeekCast, Jason Calacanis joined in for a 45 minute conversation about ways Mahalo can best be monetized through affiliate links, as he explores the affiliate world for the first time.

Jason Calacanis will never forget his first timeThe ninth episode of the GeekCast Show kicks off with some beatbox magic that puts the SXSW beatbox to shame.

In addition to being something of a working session that could help any new affiliate, we also touched on how Jason is sometimes misquoted, the workaholic lifestyle, and a tale of two Duncans (Duncan Riley of TechCrunch and Shelley Duncan of the New York Yankees).

Also, Jason will be a keynote at SES in New York next week and he promises that he’ll be dropping some “hotness”. I’ll be there, so I’ll try to get a picture of that.

5. Sam Harrelson Steps Down from ReveNews

Sam Harrelson has announced that he is stepping down as Publisher of the affiliate marketing group blog, ReveNews.

I’ve been commanding the helm of this ship since last April (April Fool’s Day actually) when Wayne, Vinny and I first announced the merger of ReveNews and CostPerNews along with the new owners of ReveNews. It was no joke despite the date.

Sam Harrelson, Best BloggerI remember that day fondly when the properties were combined under the umbrella name, PlanetBeta. I thought it was clearly a joke.

But it wasn’t by a long shot. Sam did a great job of bringing ReveNews back and making countless enhancements that he details in his goodbye post.

Not to mention his being honored as the “Best Blogger” at the recent Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Awards. Sam is a blog star of the first order.

So, why leave now?

Good question. Jim did a much better job at explaining this sort of thing than I could ever do.

In a nutshell, it feels like the right time for me to move on. This past year has been an exhausting and emotional year for me personally.

As I was reading Sam’s post, I couldn’t help hearing “Time for Me to Fly” by REO Speedwagon in my head.

I’ll miss his posts over at ReveNews and have to wonder what is in store for the site.

But I do find solace in following the new site and brand that Sam has launched… the Internet Geek Guy.

6. Affiliate Marketing Is Dead

I recently wrote an article for the print edition of eMarketing & Commerce magazine, “Affiliate Marketing Is Dead,” and it’s now available on the magazine site.

Affiliate marketing is dead. Long live affiliate marketing.

But before you accuse me of being some Chicken Little type or just another clown infatuated with hyperbole, let me explain.

The way affiliate marketing was done back in the 1990s — and still today by some folks — is done. I’m talking about banners. It’s all about Affiliate 2.0, and you might already be late to the game.
