1. Should You Go to the Next Affiliate Summit?

We've been tweaking the Affiliate Summit conference, based on feedback from attendees, and there are lots of improvements since the last show.

The Early Bird registration rates of $949 (full conference) and $199 (exhibit hall only) are going up after 3/31. Starting 4/1, the rates to register for Affiliate Summit will be $1,449 (full conference) and $299 (exhibit hall only).

As we receive agreements from speakers, they are being added to the agenda - check back frequently for updates.

Some of the new things we're doing for Affiliate Summit 2006 East:

2. Affiliate Tip - Create Custom Error Pages

If you are like most people, the error pages on your site are the default pages provided by your host. In the past, I've encouraged affiliates to customize these pages, so they can monetize these otherwise dead-ends on their sites.

Many affiliates have come back to ask how to get the error traffic to the customer error pages.

Error messages occur due to a number of different conditions taking place on your site. These error conditions generate numbers to refer to the corresponding error condition.

Some of the more common error messages are as follows:

Error in Client

  • 400 Bad syntax
  • 403 Forbidden
  • 404 Not Found (this one is the most common)

Error in Server

  • 500 Internal Error

There are a few different ways you can create your error pages.

3. Affiliate Summit Speaker, Kevin McCormick, on CBS/The Early Show

Kevin McCormick, the creator of DressKevin.com and mydrobe.com, was featured on CBS/The Early Show on Tuesday, March 14.

Kevin works with a number of affiliate programs that sell clothing. He runs some banners and has integrated product feeds into his sites. He also has Google AdSense running in content rich areas.

DressKevin.comKevin's site, DressKevin.com, has become a national phenomenon. Basically, he came to the conclusion that he wasn't the best dresser. So he went to others for advice, and eventually reach out on the Internet.

He put pictures of all of his clothes up for everyone to see at DressKevin.com, and he's asking for comments and suggestions on how to wear his clothes, and what to wear.

This is where his site visitors come in. Each day, he wants people to vote on what he should wear for all of his daily activities. And he's got quite a following in the community he's created.

He's even expanded his "help me get dressed" empire to another site called mydrobe.com, where anybody can sign up for free and have strangers on the Internet help them gear up.

Kevin will be on a panel at Affiliate Summit 2006 East, where he will discuss how he is leveraging affiliate marketing on his sites.

See the video of Kevin's segment on The Early Show at www.cbs.com.

5. Social Networks, the New Affiliate Frontier

I was chatting with Marty Fahncke the other days as part of the Affiliate Summit 2006 Preview Conference Call Series.

After discussing the use of blogs by affiliates, Marty asked about some other ways that affiliates could promote their affiliate links. I touched on PPC arbitrage, loyalty sites, e-mail, data feeds, etc., I said I thought social networks were going to be an emerging type of affiliate in the coming year.

Social networks like MySpace.com, LinkedIn and Friendster have become increasingly popular, as they offer a more robust community environment than a discussion forum. Recently, they've permeated affiliate marketing with the launch of Return on Affiliate. Affiliate Summit is getting in on the action with the Affiliate Summit Social Network.

Last week, I saw that the most frequently searched term in the search engines, according to Wordtracker, is myspace.com. It's clearly an area that should not be ignored, rather you should consider embracing it and monetizing it.

Anyhow, just about five minutes after I mentioned social networks on the conference call, I got an e-mail update from the Affiliate Classroom Blog with the title, "Social Network Sites: New Ad Channel."

As Jeffrey Perren wrote in the Affiliate Classroom Blog, "Savvy affiliate marketers are going to be near the head of the line in using this new channel to increase income. And, bravo to those brave souls!"

If you've been waiting for the next big thing, here it is on a silver platter.

By the way, the one-hour conversation is available at www.cculearning.com/affiliatesummitreplay.htm or you can download it to your MP3 player: www.affiliatesummit.com/Affiliate2.mp3
