1. Google AdSense Video Unit Trials and Tribulations
I was excited to get access to the new Video Units in Google AdSense last week, and went about the setup process.
After going into the Video Unit area and agreeing to the terms, I had to link up my AdSense account to my Google account.
Then, I was able to create my New AdSense Player from within YouTube. There are a handful of options to configure the player. I had to name and describe the player, select a color theme, and then a layout size (400 x 415, 500 x 510, and 780 x 560).
Next up, there are two options to determine the content displayed in the videos on your site: Automatic Content or Choose by Category / Provider.
If you go with Automatic Content, “YouTube will automatically target the most relevant videos for your website.” They give an option to refine the targeting by entering some keywords.

2. Video from Affiliate Summit London
Affiliate Summit London 2007 kicked off with a brief presentation by myself and my Affiliate Summit co-founder, Missy Ward.
The presentation covered the Affiliate Marketing View from the U.S.
The state of affiliate marketing as an international conversation was discussed with some data on the mobile and video opportunities for affiliate marketers, as well as ideas for leveraging Web 2.0.
For the benefit of anybody who missed the live presentation, I’ve put together a dramatic recreation on video where I play the part of myself, as well as Missy Ward.
Download the presentation if you’d like to view it in sync with the video for a fully interactive and exciting experience.
3. Affiliate Video Creative
I’m noticing that more merchants are talking about video for affiliates, but they’re not necessarily making affiliate video.
For instance, Buy.com has a new widget that’s powered by Toldya, and affiliate can create an account at Toldya and attach any video from YouTube to the widget.
They are also supposed to be adding some buy.tv videos to the creative, but in the meantime I’d like to offer up some creative.
New videos for products and services are being added each week to WeViews.tv, an affiliate video project from Missy Ward and myself, and we’d like to make those videos available to affiliates.
Feel free to grab the code for WeViews.tv videos from any of the platforms where we post them: blip.tv, Brightcove, Dailymotion, Magnify.net, Metacafe, MySpaceTV, Qoof, Revver, Yahoo! Video, and YouTube.
Please note that permission to use these videos is contingent on using the videos as is - you cannot edit them in any way.
As far as a merchant that is doing something fun and timely with video, have a look at the video from Annie’s Costumes for the Top Ten Halloween Costumes for 2007.

5. Openads Primer for Affiliates
Oliver George of Openads has posted a useful FAQ for the free Openads adserver program as a follow-up to conversations they had with affiliates at Affiliate Summit London.
He addresses the following comments and questions:
- Is Openads an ad network?
- Can I target my ads to specific pages/sections within my site?
- Can Openads manage advertising for many websites at once?
- Can I manage CPA campaigns using Openads?
- Scaling phpAdsNew was really hard!
- Can Openads provide Forecasting/Availability?
- Can Openads do X?
The latest version is Openads 2.4, and I’d say it’s one of the best tools for affiliates. It enables you to easily test and optimize campaigns, manage all of your affiliate activity in one place, and way more features than I can list here.
Go to http://www.openads.org/ for more information about Openads.
By the way, if you aren’t a big fan of installing things on your server, consider doing what I did - outsource it.
I worked with a guy named Denis from Bulgaria through Rent-a-Coder for the last two Openads upgrades. He was fast and well priced.
6. Jason Calacanis to Keynote Affiliate Summit 2008 West
Jason Calacanis is going to deliver the keynote address at Affiliate Summit 2008 West, taking place February 24-26, 2008 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Jason Calacanis is the founder and CEO of Mahalo.com, a human-powered search engine focused on the top English-language search terms, including verticals such as travel, products, news, entertainment, sports, food, and health. Prior to Mahalo.com’s launch in alpha in May, 2007, he was an “Entrepreneur in Action” at Sequoia Capital, Silicon Valley’s leading venture capital firm, a position he held since December 2006.
Jason co-founded and was the CEO of Weblogs, Inc., a network of popular weblogs that was sold to AOL in November 2005. Upon joining AOL, he was appointed senior vice president. In addition, he was named general manager of AOL’s Netscape and was responsible for the July 2006 relaunch of the iconic browser as a social bookmarking news site.
Prior to forming Weblogs Inc., Jason was the founder of Rising Tide Studios, a media company that published the magazines Silicon Alley Reporter and Digital Coast Reporter. The flagship publication later became Venture Reporter, a venture capital database, and was sold to Dow Jones.
Jason is from Brooklyn, NY and currently resides in Los Angeles and New York with his wife and bulldog. He received a B.A. in psychology from Fordham University. Jason is known for his transparency and insights into the internet and media industries.
